Letters to My Girlfriends: Day 357: What Is Real Love?

So many people feel that they are in love because of something. It could be because of an attribute someone has, it could be because someone shows them the right kind of affection, or it could even be because someone does something for them that no one else has done. I think that this "because of" love is really what leaves us feeling confused today. What happens if someone loses that attribute, withholds that affection, or stops doing for you the way you've grown accustomed? Would you stop loving them? Unfortunately, many fall victim to the because ofs and the moment it goes away, they begin to believe that they are no longer in love.
Real love is so much more than "because of." The best kind of loving is not only because of, it is supposed to include in spite of. Although the attributes you have, the affection you show, and the things you do make it easy to love you... my love for you does not depend heavily on any of those things.
This leads me to today's thoughts...
Real love has been forgotten. Perhaps this is why mothers say that you never know "real love" until you have a child. There's truth to this, I'm sure. A mother's love is the grandest example. A mother can give you a full list of because ofs as they are describing why they love their children. They can also turn right around and give you a full list of reasons they shouldn't love their children, but they love them anyway...in spite of. They love their children in spite of the attitudes, the drama, non appreciation, the sulking, the disappointment, etc. This is the in spite of love that would have saved many other relationships.
If you love me, love me with real love. I am human and will always make mistakes. I could disappoint, I could let you down, I could be the reason you became angry...I could even be the reason you wanted to stop loving me. But don't. Look deep within and find your unconditional love for me. Girlfriends, whether up close and personal or at a distance, there is someone out there today who could use your unconditional love. Lead by example and show them what real love it all about.
