Letters to My Girlfriends: Day 363: Why Can't It Be Both?

December 29, 2011 - 11:13am - Jennifer Tardy

ImageAs we speak, I am on a two-week vacation. I'm enjoying my travels while spending time with family and friends. Just the other day, I happened to be sitting on the bed talking with my cousin. I said, "I miss my honey, but I'm sure he's enjoying his freedom while I'm away." She stopped me and said, "Just because he's enjoying his free time without you around, what makes you think he doesn't miss you?"

That is when I had my light bulb moment. Why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't it be both? Why can't he be thoroughly enjoying his time without me and still miss me?

I think we all have a tendency to think like that at times. We think that every decision must be one thing or another, but in reality, there are some things that can be both.

Can you love someone and move on? Yes. Is it possible to be remorseful and still go out with your girlfriends? Yes. Can you feel satisfied in your life and still seek new adventures? Yes. Is it possible to love God and not go to church? Yes. Can my honey be happy when I'm away and still miss me? Absolutely! One decision does not always affect the other. One situation does not negate the other. One of your truths does not automatically make the other a lie.

Do not fall for the same thing I almost fell for when I made the assumption that I wasn't missed at home. Of course he misses me! This is a two week vacation for goodness sake. The longest we've been away from one another is a week at the most. He's only human. Just know, Girlfriends, you don't always have to choose sides. You don't always have to go one way or the other. As a matter of fact, you don't even have to assume that others are only thinking one way. Why can't it be both? So the next time you make an assumption about something or you feel pressured to decide in one way, stop and ask yourself if having both is possible. Do not make a decision difficult when it doesn't have to be. See you tomorrow, ladies!

Words I Live By

“I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

To do what I’m supposed to do…

And learn what I’m supposed to learn,

In order to be who I’m supposed to be…

And in the end…what God has for me,

Will be precisely what it’s supposed to be…

Just for me.”
